Story behind the photo: people, portraits and butterflies

Danielle Roper and I like to work location portraits together for our Tyler, Texas studio Cafe' Portraits (she poses our clients and I do the shooting). This particular day we were working at Tyler's Children's Park. Right in the middle of the session I looked up in a nearby bush and was awestruck by the most beautiful butterfly I have ever seen.  The sun was streaming through its wings and the whole scene was just so beautiful. This butterfly was dipping and dodging, lightly tipping flower buds but never really settling long enough for me to grab a picture.

Danielle loves butterflies and she was encouraging me to take some photos for her to enlarge and frame.   But, the butterfly was definitely not cooperating.

We headed back to our portrait assignment (and waiting clients) and as we walked away I just sneaked a quick look back as this butterfly floated and then stopped on a flower.   I grabbed the shot (and several more).   I especially love the shallow depth of field in this image and the way the sun backlights the insect's translucent wings.  I took the photo with a Canon 5D and a Canon f2.8 70-200mm zoom lens (my favororite lens on the whole planet).  Enjoy!
